The agency founder would say my greatest strength is that I don't need to be managed. She told me the problem. I figured out the solution, the architecture, the timeline, the deployment. She never had to ask for a status update. The software just appeared, and then her staff was using it, and then the old vendor was cancelled.

My weakness, she'd say, is that I disappear into the work. When I'm locked in on a build, everything else falls away. I once spent two and a half weeks on a project sprint where I didn't do anything else. No exercise. No reading. No people. Just screens. The output was excellent. But I wasn't excellent. I was burnt out and miserable and I didn't realize it until the project was done and I looked up and couldn't remember the last time I'd had a real conversation with another person.

I've gotten better at this. I now deliberately cap deep work at four to five hours a day and make sure the rest of my life keeps breathing alongside it. But the tendency is still there. When something grabs me, I want to give it everything. Learning to give it enough instead of everything is an ongoing project.
