## What it is [#what-it-is]

Your partner has their arms around your neck and head from the front. You are on your knees in a turtle-style base. Their chest is pressing down on top of you, but **chest-to-back contact is NOT yet established** --- they are in front of you, not behind you. The strangle threat is real and immediate.

This is the central position of the entire instructional. Every escape chain in Volume 02 begins here.

## Key structural details [#key-structural-details]

The **central dilemma** defines everything about this position: your partner must choose between staying in front (where they can strangle but are relatively static) and going behind (where they get chest-to-back but must unlock their hands to transition).

From the transcript: "If they elect to stay in front, the good news is they're pretty static --- you have access to their hands and can see what's going on. The bad news is there's always a threat of the strangle if you're not careful."

Your three priorities on the bottom, in this order:

1. **Defend the submission.** The strangle arm is the primary danger. Monitor it at all times.
2. **Defend the go-behind.** Don't let partner run around to your back without your hands engaged.
3. **Get your back on the floor.** Elegant shoulder roll or a sloppy cow-tip --- both work.

Defense and escape are not the same thing. If you feel the strangle arm creeping up past your shoulder line, stop everything and defend the grip before resuming any escape attempt.

## Principles that apply here [#principles-that-apply-here]

* [Back to the floor](/docs/body/mat/principles/back-to-floor) --- the north-star direction from this position. Even before you know a specific technique, getting your back to the mat puts you in a better place than staying underneath front headlock.
* [Inside position](/docs/body/mat/principles/inside-position) --- your hands must fight for inside position on the strangle arm. Primary defensive hand covers the strangle arm; secondary hand supports.
* [Retract over extend](/docs/body/mat/principles/retract) --- keep your elbows bent and close. Extending creates separation that opens strangles on either side.

## Moves I know from here (outgoing) [#moves-i-know-from-here-outgoing]

* [Sit-through to half guard](/docs/body/mat/moves/sit-through-to-half-guard) --- the foundational escape. Walk to a leg side, frame, wedge, capture partner's leg, arrive in half guard.
* [Two-on-one pass-off](/docs/body/mat/moves/two-on-one-pass-off) --- the patient approach. Establish inside-thumb grips, wait for partner to unlock, pump-handle the head to the outside.
* [Thumb-post drag](/docs/body/mat/moves/thumb-post-drag) --- when hands won't unlock. Quasi-arm-drag at the shoulder that works like an Americana to break the grip.
* [Sucker drag](/docs/body/mat/moves/sucker-drag) --- true arm drag for the strongest grips. Two hands on partner's tricep, change the angle, head moves free.

## How I end up here (incoming) [#how-i-end-up-here-incoming]

* [Snap-down reversal](/docs/body/mat/moves/snap-down-reversal) --- your partner snaps you down from a scramble or standing exchange, establishing front headlock.
